Organic Skin Care for Aging Skin: Avoid these Ingredients
Depending on who you're talking to, the word organic can mean different things. If you talk to someone in the food industry, they'll think you're talking about products that do not contain pesticides or growth hormones. However, to someone in the skin care industry, it means products that do not contain artificial ingredients, petroleum-based ingredients, or other unsafe ingredients. Nevertheless, there are some skin care products that use the word even when the product it is used to describe actually contains petroleum and other noxious ingredients. After all, petroleum is not a synthetically produced product. This is why you should make a habit of reading product labels.
Anti Aging Ingredients to Avoid
The reason anti aging products exist is to help fight the aging process, however, there are a few ingredients that can actually speed up the aging process and lead to wrinkles, dull skin and other skin problems. Make sure to read the labels before buying any organic skin care products.
*Synthetic Colors
Synthetic colors are made using coal tar and contain heavy metal salts. These components may produce free radicals and lead to eye wrinkles and dull skin, so if you want an effective anti wrinkle cream you should try and avoid all products that contain FD&C or D&C colors.
*Petrochemicals
This group of ingredients is derived from crude oil, giving it the name of Petrochemicals. These petrochemicals coat your skin and make it impossible for your body to eliminate toxins. They can lead to dull skin, and cause allergies and clogged pores.
Avoid anti aging creams that contain mineral oil, paraffin and petrolatum. Especially if you have oily or combination skin.
*Sulfates
These components are usually used to make soaps, detergents and cleansers. If you have a hard time finding them listed in the ingredients list, look for their alias: sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. Sulfates dry out the skin and cause rashes, and in some cases have been known to cause ocular problems.
*Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)
These components are used in conditioning products. However, they have been linked with antibiotic resistance. Stay away from products that contain benzalkonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride and cetrimonium bromide, among others.
*Alcohol
Alcohol is a big no-no for any wrinkle treatment because it dehydrates the skin and promotes the development of wrinkles. Stearyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol are the only two alcohol ingredients that your skin care product should contain.
These are only a few of the ingredients you should avoid if you want to get a safe product. By doing a bit more research, you can find the best wrinkle creams out there.
However, time isn't always something you can spare, so in that case we've done some of the research for you.
